WELCOME!

This is Buzzy's Country Store blog designed to keep you apprised of what's going on at the Store. Buzzy's is a general store located in St. Mary's County, Southern Maryland near Pt. Lookout State Park. Buzzy and Jean Ridgell purchased the Store from Jean's father Harry Raley in 1953. Buzzy operated it until his passing in 2009. His son J. Scott Ridgell is the current owner.

St. Mary's College Graduation and Buzzy's Afterwards

When I drove thru St. Mary's College this past Saturday and saw the signs directing folks where to park for Grad Walks, I thought "Guess this is the new reference for Graduation Ceremony."

Turns out that I was only semi-correct because the Graduation Ceremony itself was a combination of virtual activity with speeches on film and the Graduates actually walking up to the stage and being presented their diplomas.

The College held 3 Grad Walks during the course of the day one at 9, noon and 3 p.m.  To get an idea of what this was like for the 346 individuals graduating (click here.)  Note that the Commencement Speaker was Brandon Scott the current Mayor of Baltimore and a graduate of St. Mary's College in 2006:

Following the 3 p.m. Grad Walk, one of the graduates, Kaitlyn, and her parents dropped into Buzzy's Country Store.  They had visited the Store previously and wanted to stop back by and say hello which I am glad that they did.   (Kaitlyn had actually finished up her studies in 2020 but due to the Covid restrictions had to wait until this year to participate in a graduation ceremony.)

During my conversation with Kaitlyn and her folks, I noted that I had graduated from St. Mary's and showed them my ring.  Kaitlyn's Mom noted that she too had graduated from St. Mary's in 1995 some 20 years after me.  When I showed them my ring, they each showed me theirs': rings mind you.

Barbara Demko then took this photo of the three of us displaying our rings on the Buzzy's Store counter.  I'm willing to bet that this 3-college-ring-photo is a first of its kind ever to be taken on the Buzzy counter.  (And from the looks of how the 3 of us are displaying our rings, please, no jokes that we St. Mary's College graduates don't have thumbs!)

Musically, the most famous of all graduation songs is one that you probably don't recognize by its title "Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 in D."  However, you certainly know it when you hear it because it is played at EVERY graduation you ever have to go to.  (If you click on the SMC link above you will hear it being played.)  It was composed by a British dude Edward Elgar who wrote it in the early 1900's.  In 1905 he came to Yale University's graduation ceremony to receive an honorary award and his song was played in his honor.  As they say, the rest is history (click here for more info on why we graduate to Elgar.)
