This is Buzzy's Country Store blog designed to keep you apprised of what's going on at the Store. Buzzy's is a general store located in St. Mary's County, Southern Maryland near Pt. Lookout State Park. Buzzy and Jean Ridgell purchased the Store from Jean's father Harry Raley in 1953. Buzzy operated it until his passing in 2009. His son J. Scott Ridgell is the current owner.

Mosquito Coast Anti-Hero

Speaking of hero's (previous posts) here is a little different twist on the subject.  For most boys, their first hero in life is usually their father.  As to whether or not Dad remains a hero to the son depends a lot on life's many twists and turns.  Sometimes the son grows up to slowly learn that his hero dad is something less.  In some dire cases, the hero worship can even take a 180.

The novel Mosquito Coast tells the story of a man who moves his family from the U.S. to a Central American jungle where he attempts to start life anew. The story is told thru the viewpoint of the man's son who comes to realize that his hero father is really quite crazy. 

The novel was made into a movie starring Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren and River Phoenix as the son.  Like many great books, the movie lost something in its transition to the screen.  Still, it is worth seeing even if Ebert disagrees in the following video review of the movie:

Seriously doubt that the songwriter of the following ever regarded his dad as any kind of hero:
