"What are going to do?" I asked him.
"Cut grass," he replied and then went onto to tell me how he has a small lawn service business and cuts grass for folks on his days off when he is not driving a delivery truck.
"If I were to hit that lottery though, I would still want to stay busy but I'd sure as hell quit the truck driving and just cut grass which is what I really like doing."
I asked him "Even if you don't win the lotto, and that's what you enjoy doing, then why don't you just go ahead and cut grass full time anyway?"
He said "Believe me I ask myself that everyday because I hate doing this and I got all kinds of people wanting me to do their yards. I could cut grass full time. But driving the truck is steady, year round work and I get some benefits that I don't want to give up, so I figured I'd stick it out for now. But if I win that lottery tonight...."
Unsure where to take the conversation from there, I handed him the check and said "Well if you do win and I don't see you again - good luck."
He laughed and said, "I'll see you in two weeks."
Got me thinking about all the folks who are stuck doing jobs they don't really care for and would be so much better off doing something that they enjoy doing - even if it is cutting grass. Good clip here from the movie Up in the Air on the subject:
