This is Buzzy's Country Store blog designed to keep you apprised of what's going on at the Store. Buzzy's is a general store located in St. Mary's County, Southern Maryland near Pt. Lookout State Park. Buzzy and Jean Ridgell purchased the Store from Jean's father Harry Raley in 1953. Buzzy operated it until his passing in 2009. His son J. Scott Ridgell is the current owner.

Running for Judge?

Candidate for Circuit Court Judge Joe Stanalonis (click here) dropped by Buzzy's Country Store yesterday afternoon to meet and greet the 4 O' Clock Club and everyone else who was there.  His opponent Dave Densford (click here) was in the Store last week.  Since they have both visited Buzzy's, obviously they are both very well qualified to be judge.  But I'm still not sure why judges are elected.  Dave was appointed by the Governor a couple months ago.  But now he and Joe are schlepping around places like Buzzy's hustling for votes for an election to determine it in April. Sure seems like a hosed up system to me.   (How much time and effort did Gov. O'Malley and company spend figuring out who to appoint for these couple of months?)
I started to make some joke about or connection with Lady Justice (left) being blindfolded etc. but found out that that wasn't always so.

"Since the 15th century, Lady Justice has often been depicted wearing a blindfold. The blindfold represents objectivity, in that justice is or should be meted out objectively, without fear or favor, regardless of identity, money, power, or weakness; blind justice and impartiality. The earliest Roman coins depicted Justitia with the sword in one hand and the scale in the other, but with her eyes uncovered. Justitia was only commonly represented as "blind" since about the end of the 15th century..... many sculptures simply leave out the blindfold altogether. For example, atop the Old Bailey courthouse in London, a statue of Lady Justice stands without a blindfold; the courthouse brochures explain that this is because Lady Justice was originally not blindfolded, and because her “maidenly form” is supposed to guarantee her impartiality which renders the blindfold redundant." (From wikipedia - click here.)

Electing our judges is an issue I may or may not get.  However, the "maidenly form" explanation mentioned above is something I definitely don't want to explore.  Good luck Joe and Dave. You're going to need it.

Hello J. Scott and all my new friends at Buzzy's. Thank you all so much for your hospitality while I was in town. I had a blast and loved getting to know you all. As J now knows, when I say I'll be back, I mean it...so I am not sure when, but trust that you will see me again very soon. Hopefully sooner than later! Can't wait actually. Take care and have fun! --Amy Moinet
